THE SMILE JOURNAL · PLANNING AHEAD
Understanding your orthodontic treatment estimate. Practice guide · Updated October 22, 2026
Ask what is included An estimate is more helpful when it explains the specific services covered. Ask about assessments, imaging, appointments, appliances, and retainers.
Understand possible extras Ask about replacement appliances, unexpected visits, or changes to the plan. Knowing how these are handled can reduce confusion later.
Check insurance details Ask your insurer about orthodontic benefits and limits. Confirm what the office expects insurance to pay and what you would be responsible for.
Keep a written copy Save your estimate and payment terms. If you are uninsured or paying yourself, ask the office about good faith estimate rights and procedures.
